kick off: answer the following and then work on the picture below –

  • Who has or knows someone who has a purebred?
  • What do you think the term purebred means?
  • How do you think purebred pets are different from those that aren’t purebred?
  • Where do you think purebred animals get their traits?
  • Do you think that purebred animals occur naturally?
  • Can selective breeding be used for benefit?

The female is called a purebred for fur type because she has two genes for rough fur. The male guinea pig also is purebred for fur type because he has two genes for smooth fur. Each of the offspring, though, is called a hybrid for fur type because each inherited one gene for rough fur and one gene for smooth fur. Notice the types of fur that have occurred in the third generation.

  1. An organism that gets two of the same genes is called a purebred.
  2. An organism with two different genes is called a hybrid.
  3. In this example, (rough OR smooth) fur is dominant.

1. Read / Discuss Selective Breeding: ch.4 s.3 Prent.Hall book

2. Begin Selective Breeding debate:

In your table groups, we will have side A debate against side B about the following:

  1. Plants bred to increase resistance to disease in crops
  2. Cows bred to increase meat production before being slaughtered
  3. Fruits bred for a longer shelf life
  4. Animals produced to be clones

Use the following questions when preparing or debating these topics:

  •   How will this impact the environment?
  •   How will this impact the health of the organism?
  •   Is there a benefit for the organism?
  •   Who benefits from this change?
  •   Possible complications to the organisms are…
  •   Will this impact other organisms?
  •   Will this cause the organism to be more or less expensive for consumers?
  •   Will it cost more to raise or grow this organism?
  •   How does the change in traits enhance or take away from the organism?
