I have certainly enjoyed this year with you guys.  Ya'll have done such a great job and I have been very proud of you.  8th graders – it's been real, it's been fun, and it's been really fun.  Do great things in life!  We will miss you.

You will have a district test tomorrow.

Please use the review ppt to study for the test as a class.

Please also remember to turn in any missing work that you have – check your online gradebook.

6th grade:

kick off: How will technology in society affect your everyday life?

1. overview of the LEGO Mindstorm NXT robots

2. get into groups — assign robot package to each

3. go over rules and expectations

4. build bots

5. work on programming (using the pallette instructions in the programming software)

Robot Challenge:

 

  • You will have the class period on Wednesday the 26th to complete the challenge
  • Your rover has landed on Mars and is tasked to collect a sample from a martian rock.  Due to the terrain, you will have to have your robot automatically navigate around several obstacles and up a hill in order to get to the rock you need your sample from. (i.e. – your robot will be on one side of the room and the blue ball is on top of the front desk…you will have to go up the ramp.  Your bot must successfully navigate to the ball and knock it over.)
  • Good luck teams!

note: Tuesday June 1st we will break down the robots and inventory all the pieces and make sure your kit is complete

kick off: turn in articles reviews

1. New Unit question:  How will robots make our lives (personally, socially, educationally, etc.) better and/or worse? (this is your guiding question for this unit)

On a separate sheet of paper, write a short description of some of the key themes covered in the film Roving Mars (40min) : (Choose 2 of the 5 themes below) – turn in before you leave!

  • The process of designing and constructing the two Mars Rovers
  • Challenges faced by scientists, engineers and designers during the design & construction phase
  • The technology used to propel the Rovers into space & ensure a safe, successful landing on Mars
  • The exploratory techniques employed by the Rovers to gather data and images about Mars
  • The importance of teamwork and collaboration in working towards a common goal

students need to finish researching for their project, they are allowed to use the computers and printer to print out labels and legends/keys for projects. please remind students that projects are due tomorrow!

7th grade:
read ch.4 then work on the assessment questions 1-15, 19 on pgs. 128-129

please listen attentively and respectfully as a guest speaker from the crisis center speaks with you.

kick off: find an article from one of the magazines up front

  • please DO NOT damage magazines or take them from class

Monday

1. Once you find your article, work on article review

  • use the article review rubric to practice analyzing and discerning current topics in science
  • you may write on the article review page and write your draft on the back.
  • note: finding an article should only take 15 minutes, reading it about 20 min, and beginning the review about 10 min.

Tuesday

2. Work on article review draft and begin typing it

  • make sure you follow the instructions exactly on the article review rubric!
  • if you have a computer at home, please allow those who do not have a computer at home to use the class period to type their paper.

kick off: each person will summarize to the class in 10 seconds or less what their article is about.

3. Finish typing article review, print it out and turn it in.  Staple the rubric to the top please. (Due Wednesday)
